The Salt & Alcohol Method
Drawing old, ghosted flavors out of a bowl overnight.
What it's for
Removing ghosted flavors — the taste of old tobacco lingering in the bowl.
Not for every pipe
Do not use this method on meerschaum or clay pipes.
The procedure
- Remove the stem
- Plug the draft hole
- Fill the bowl with non-iodized salt
- Add a few drops of grain alcohol
- Leave overnight
- Dump the salt and wipe the bowl
- Let the pipe rest 24 hours
