The Captain's Codex · Pipe Tobacco · Lesson 5 of 16
Pipe Tobacco Families
Aromatic, Virginia, Burley and English — the four great families of pipe tobacco.
Aromatic
Sweet blends with flavors like vanilla, cherry and rum. The best place for beginners to start.
Virginia
Natural sweetness and hay notes. A good path for cigar smokers coming to the pipe.
Burley
Nutty, smooth and less sweet. A good choice if sweet aromatics aren't for you.
English / Latakia
Smoky, leathery, campfire notes.
From the Codex
“Sweet smoke welcomes the curious. Latakia does not whisper.”
